The foreign post office under the Customs on Thursday seized around 79kg of contraband Khat leaves that had arrived in the city from Ethiopia by air. The haul is estimated to be worth around Rs 2 crore.
« The consignment headed for Howrah’s Domjur and Kolkata’s Narkeldanga was being passed off as tea leaves. They can be consumed either by chewing or with milk, » said an official.
Khat, narcotics officers said, are now available across Kolkata and Howrah under the guise of « green tea » and this was the first time that such a huge quantity was seized in the city.
