Meet María Teresa Osorio de Serna, one of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)’s most wanted international fugitives now that Joaquín « El Chapo » Guzmán has been captured.
On the DEA’s most wanted page, El Chapo’s name has been crossed off, and next in line is the Colombian drug queen-pin. Not much is known of Osorio de Serna, though BBC Mundo did report on Wednesday that she was a launderer for Pablo Escobar‘s Medellín cartel and that she is wanted on money laundering and cocaine conspiracy charges.
« She is practically a ghost, » BBC reporter David Gagne wrote. « Almost nobody knows of her. »
Even the DEA doesn’t seem to have a clear understanding of Osorio de Serna. Fox News Latino notes some inconsistences on their websites.
The DEA’s international agency describes her as 5 feet tall and 135 pounds with a last known address in Colombia. But the New Jersey division claims Osorio de Serna is 5’2″, weighs 160 pounds and has a last address in Hialeah, Florida.
That’s not all. While Osorio de Serna is now listed as first on the DEA’s page of most wanted international fugitives, DEA spokeswoman Barbara Carreno says she’s actually not their biggest priority.
“Just because she is on the same page as Chapo, doesn’t mean she is on the same level as Chapo. … These lists are not organized by rank.” Carreno told the news site.
Regardless, there’s one thing that remains true: The recapture of El Chapo doesn’t mean the end of the international drug trade, something even the Mexican drug lord told Sean Penn for his Rolling Stone interview.
