Officer Jacai Colson was days shy of his 29th birthday.
Colson, who was a four-year veteran of the Prince George’s County Police Department, had been working undercover within the narcotics division, though his post has not been connected to the attack. After one of the brothers allegedly shot into the station’s front door, Colson and several other officers rushed outside to confront the men. Colson was shot once he exited the station.
The PGCPD recently released a flurry of news regarding the shooting, including the fact that the evidence shows that the gunman who attacked the police station intended to die during the gun battle and that the shooting was « callously recorded » by the brothers. They also released the news that three men, all brothers, are now in custody for the crime. It was previously reported that two of the brothers had opened fire on the precinct, and it’s not clear if the third brother was part of the shootout or if he was just a co-conspirator.
CNN later reported that Colson was not killed by one of the Ford brothers, but was « inadvertently shot by a fellow responding officer during the gun battle. »
The police also released information that all three of the Ford brothers will be charged with second-degree murder, six counts of attempted first-degree murder, nine counts of use of a handgun in the commission of a felony and additional charges.
Fraternal Order of Police President John Teletchea remembered Colson as someone with an infectious smile and a tremendous personality. Colson would have turned 29 later this week.
